magnolia sunsets

celebrate we will because life is short, but sweet for certain. yes, i do know that is a dave matthew's lyric, but it's so apropos i couldn't help myself.

every year, for the past 13 years, my friend donald has put on one of the best parties holidays of the year. the celebration of life. a feast to commemorate the wonders and joys of being alive. some of the festivities include:

eating from the tables feet deep of pot lucked deliciousness [so appropriate to commemorate what each person chooses to bring to celebrate their enjoyment of food... if you catch my drift]

standing around the ever expanding, ever burning, ever smoldering, ever heat producing fire with strangers, best friends, old friends, family members, old family members, old people, young people, really young people babies, and cousins you didn't even know you had and met AT the celebration of life [true story]

perusing the massive gardens illuminated by fancily colored christmas lights and luminaries, carefully avoiding the rabid fox, dodging the heavy thud of motorcycle parts in the shop, and finding creative uses for everyday tools

and drinking plenty of healthy concoctions [the possibilities are endless] amidst comforting conversations that somehow manage to expand your mind, while simultaneously easing you into that mental place of peace you never want to leave.

this year, we said goodbye to sugar bear. we miss her. we missed her slapping up of overrun beer from the keg, or the turkey jus in the pan beside the smoker, chasing her around the fire, watching her pass out from bliss at our feet... generally being the happiest dog you've ever met.

but we enjoyed being thankful for the time we have. taking notice of that time while we have it. giving lots of hugs. lots of smiles. lots and lots of cheers and saluts. life is short, but it is sweet. that is for certain.

Nicely said. Life is short but sweet indeed. This year was definitely different without Miss Sugar Bear there to pick up our crumbs. sniff sniff. Those are some great photos you have.

I had fun even though it was a bit chilly out. The fire kept us warm. This was the first year I missed the toast, I had to use the restroom. It was a different feeling missing one of the family and foundering members of the Celebration of Life. Here's one for her, forever in our hearts.
